PeerNest first welcomes students with a simple, science‑informed “stress test” that quickly checks how intense their emotions and problems are, and whether there are any red‑flag signs like severe distress, self‑harm thoughts, or complete burnout. Based on this, the app guides them down two clear paths: if the situation is mild to moderate and mainly about feeling alone, confused, or unmotivated, they are matched with PeerBuddies—relatable peers who listen, share lived experience, and offer practical, everyday strategies in a non‑judgmental space; if the stress test shows serious or complex issues, the app nudges them toward professional counselling and makes it easy to request a callback, referral, or online session instead of staying only with peer support. For ongoing support, students can also talk to an in‑app AI counselor that is explicitly designed for mental health, not general chat, so it uses gentle language, clear limits, and built‑in safety checks to encourage real‑world help rather than replacing it; this is very different from general AIs like ChatGPT, which are powerful but not purpose‑built or clinically guided for mental health, can give inconsistent or risky advice, and are not recommended as standalone support for people in distress.
