Every year, an estimated 1.05 billion tonnes of food are wasted globally at consumer-level (households, restaurants/food-services, retail), accounting for roughly 19% of all food made available to consumers. Of that waste, about 60% (≈ 631 million tonnes) originates from households; the remainder comes from food-service (restaurants, hotels, etc.) and retail sectors
Description
In India, food waste remains a massive challenge: at the household level, the average per-person waste is estimated at 55 kg-50 kg per year. Overall, this leads to nearly 74 million tonnes of food being lost or discarded in India annually, which represents a significant portion of foodgrain output and broader agricultural production.Meanwhile, millions of individuals and communities remain food-insecure or experience hunger. According to recent global estimates, over 783 million people worldwide face chronic hunger and food insecurity.(SDG 2 – Zero Hunger),(SDG 3-Good Health and Well-Being) and (SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production) covers this Idea.
