Description

The Smart Thinkers team is developing the Safe Start System, an innovative in-car safety solution designed to reduce preventable road accidents in India. Every year, thousands of injuries and fatalities occur due to drivers not wearing seatbelts or smoking while driving, leading to distraction, reduced visibility, and delayed reaction time. Our system directly addresses these risks through an intelligent, automated approach.

The Safe Start System uses seatbelt verification sensors and a gas detection module that monitors smoking inside the vehicle. If the seatbelt is not worn correctly, the car simply will not start. If the driver smokes while driving, the system issues a warning — and if ignored, it safely cuts off the engine to prevent further risk. To stop people from tricking the system by placing the belt behind their back, we are currently working on an AI-based camera verification feature that ensures correct seatbelt usage with high accuracy.

We have already built a functional prototype, tested the core features, and received positive feedback from mentors and evaluators. With your support, we aim to further improve the product, add smart camera detection, enhance real-time monitoring, and prepare the system for large-scale installation.
